Mary, Mother of the Church Silk Scarf

photos by Caitlin Renn Photography

Ethically made, vintage inspired, thoughtfully designed - this pure silk scarf marries two things I love; florals and The Blessed Virgin Mary. What an honor to collaborate with Litany NYC to create a deeply meaningful and beautiful accessory that I pray is a simple reminder of Our Lady throughout our daily lives.

A few years ago, my mind was blown when I discovered the Marian meaning of flowers. In medieval times, hundreds of flowers were named as symbols of the life, mysteries and privileges of Mary. I love how the Catholic faith celebrates a sacramental view of the world where everything is imbued with meaning and purpose. Beauty leads us to what is Good and ultimately to the Truth. Something as simple and pure as a flower can point us to the Creator and enrich our prayer life. Every inch of this scarf speaks to some deeper meaning. The gorgeous, plumed creamy Dahlia represents "The Church," the sweet blue geraniums as "The Gentle Virgin," and the Lilly of the Valley as "Our Lady's tears." The ivy border is reminiscent of medieval tapestry while beautiful hydrangeas peppered throughout say, "Ave Maria" or "Hail Mary."  Even the soft and organic foliage spilling over the border hearkens to Caravaggio's "Entombment of Christ" and echoing how Christ's hand extends over the painting as if reaching out to us. Even the blue - a sacred color, one that reminds us of Mary’s faithfulness and her role in salvation history - has deeply biblical roots, and she has traditionally been portrayed in blue since the earliest Christians depictions of her. Not only is this 100% silk scarf full of meaning, it was so important to have it made ethically here in the U.S. Working with Litany NYC was an incredible privilege. Litany is a women’s clothing line that seeks to build up the dignity of women and provide an alternative to fast fashion.

Now, for what feels like a zillion ways to wear and style this vintage-inspired floral scarf. I love to throw it on in a simple bandana style to highlight the florals.

Bonus, it also is a gorgeous and breathable mask to pull up while running errands.

Classic double wrapped in the French style is so easy and fun to dress up simple T's and button-downs.

Always the best to tie back hair...

And, throw around any bag... ( well, of course my favorite handmade French Market Bags) which I use year-around and was my favorite Christmas present from my husband years ago.

The versatility of this scarf is amazing - it can take any color - gray, navy, white, camel, black, you name it.

I love silk scarves year around - especially throughout winter to brighten and lighten heavy fabrics. It's gorgeous peaking out from under a sweater or layered over a coat.

Just... the dreaminess. I love how this scarf can be taken everywhere as a beautiful reminder Our Mother's love, to be wrapped in her presence.

Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us!
